Taiwan's Most Scenic Beach | Jibei Island
Welcome to Penghu's Jibei Island! This is a quick highlight of what has probably been the best beach I have seen in Taiwan so far. The great thing about Penghu is that it is only a 50 minute flight from Taipei.

How do I get a place like this?
I actually found this place by posting on a Facebook group explaining who I was and what I was looking for (budget and what not). I think that would probably be the best way to get a few decent options. Oddly enough I just moved out of this home yesterday, so maybe it’s back on the market! Haha
Very informative. Thank you. What university is "Tai Da" or similar sounding. N.T.U. fees I think are USD$5,000 per semester. Hopefully the other university is more reasonable!
台大 “Taida” is also known as NTU “National Taiwan University” and I think that fee your thinking of is for their more premier program known as ICLP which is kind of a crazy price if you ask me…. Although I hope to try one day 🤣 they have a cheaper program albeit less intensive that is more common, it’s called CLD~ In general three month group courses tend to hover around 30,000 in my experience. You can also consider other cities, I am enrolling in a course down in Tainan this week at 成功大學 it looks quite promising!
@@Travelingjoe Thank you. Very helpful, especially as the Taiwanese universities' websites seem to not work. What course would you recommend for a beginner coming to Taipei specifically to learn Chinese? Something with the Practical Audio-Visual Chinese books you prefer perhaps? The textbooks are near impossible to find in England. I am hoping three months intensive study should get me started with basic language enough to continue learning.
@QuoVadistis I think there are two many textbooks that I have seen used, most recently I have used the series “A Course in Contemporary Chinese” which I think is pretty good. I am actually about to start a comprehensive program down at NCKU (Tainan) this Monday, it looks even more promising than the schools in Taipei. In fact I would probably suggest if language learning is the priority to maybe consider studying outside of Taipei. Your cost of living will be lower and you would have more opportunities to speak the language as there are less English speakers~ Maybe after a few weeks I can update how the program down at NCKU is~
I used to live in 西門町 I didn’t have a choice because it was a company house. But it was a terrible place to live. I feel they had no time after work to do anything until they transferred me to 天母. That area is much better
Definitely agree with you about Tianmu!
Great info!
Thanks so much!
DiDi is to adorable 🥰 she definitely looks like she's In Charge of the House!! This video was Great and Informative I'm considering moving aboard and Taiwan is one of the countries I'm considering!! Tiachung is one area that I'm looking into!! But this top floor apartment seems to have everything a person may need to live in!! I want to say Great 👍🏽 Video and Thanks for Sharing🧡🤍🎇🤍🧡
Thanks so much! I Didi was the highlight of the house for sure! I myself am moving to Kaohsiung next week so I am back to house hunting again, hope we can both find something amazing~ !
@@Travelingjoe Well if you don't mind I will hit you up from time to time just to check ✅ on the area's that offers the most for your buck 💸 and the surrounding areas!! That👍🏽 again and Happy 😁 House Hunting!!
I love Taiwan. I'm learning Chinese and im 60 days in and I already have memorized and learned 100 words! Hopefully when I move to Taiwan, I'll be able to speak good Chinese as I plan on doing an Animation Job in Taiwan somewhere. I visited Taiwan last year and I fell in love. Can't wait to go back one day.
加油!You can come to Taiwan to keep studying for sure, I think the opportunity to learn mandarin is one of the best reasons to live in Taiwan~
This is amazing. I came to the US when I was young, and even though I was born in Taiwan, I knew very little about it. Thank you so much for your wonderful videos. I really should visit Taiwan again as an adult.
Thank you so much, there is still so much left to explore!

Hi Joe, One time in busan, I took a touring ferry around the coast of Busan. At first, I thought that we could see Japan (At least Tsushima island) from the ferry, but I was so wrong. When I looked at the map, the distance between these 2 areas were approximately 50 kilometers (31.1 miles). If we were to travel this distance, it would take about 1-2 hours to reach our destination. Therefore, I realized that I needed to go way more than where we went on the ferry tour. Also, I realized that everyone on the boat including us don’t have our passports. Passports are required if we want to go to another country. Otherwise, we are commiting what’s called, “illegal traveling”. All in all, I thought it would be easy to get from Busan to Japan, as Busan is on the very edge of South Korea, and Japan is exactly below Busan. However, I found out that not only we need a passport to get to Japan, but also I realized that the touring ferry we took in Busan just went around the coast (maybe 0.5-ish miles from the land).
What direction of study would you recommend someone trying to increase the Tocfl score from B1 and up? Language schools/univiersities/ group classes/1-1 tutoring etc.
If it were me I would do about 30% dedicated study towards the specific test and 70% speaking practice (either 1v1 or small group lessons). I think the most important thing is getting tons of speaking practice in~!
Can you write your recommendations because what?

Hi, I booked a tour package and the meet-up point is around Chikushi Gate of Hakata Station, the tour depart at 8.20am. So, I am wondering if I could make it on time using the bus. Does the disembarkation really start sharp at 7.30 am or it could be earlier?

Is Totoro's Bus Stop still there? I tried looking for it in Google Maps, and I can't seem to find it.
I just checked and apparently it was moved by the owner in 2023, I just realized as well~ 😞
Oh man no joke. I want to live here. Noise is yes, more stairs is also yes... idk I'm wired and weird.
The 'kitchen' is a little off putting.
It is pretty much a makeshift kitchen~ Many apartments and studios will either lack kitchens altogether or have small kitchenettes
@@Travelingjoe for me that’s tough. I cook all three meals and would be miserable eating out health wise. I’d have to wait and buy a high end apartment in Daan area that has a kitchen
The only thing I don’t like about Taiwan is they don’t make it easy for you if you want to live there for more than 90 days. You have to do visa runs every 90 days, be rich and own property, or go to school for something there?
Are bath towels provided?
You know, I cannot remember… wouldn’t be surprised if they were~ apologies for my bad memory!
@@Travelingjoe ok thx bro

I am attending one now named "ShuoHao" and it's not bad!

Going next year. For the international karate Olympic Games! Can’t wait!! Love the culture and the country
That sounds awesome! If you are participating then good luck at the games~!
What made you choose LASIK over SMILE? Was it a cost issue or something else?
I remember it was the price, ultimately after consulting with the doctor decided the price jump wasn’t worth it for me. It’s been probably a year or two now and everything is still going well!
@@Travelingjoe cheers. From what I gather, SMILE is better if you have dry eyes, is less invasive, and has a faster recovery. I’m going to go for a consultation at the same clinic you used. Thanks for the info and video. You have a nice channel.
Good video, thanks
Hi Joe, thanks you for this valuable video. However I would like to double check with you, I want to go to NTU, this is where I will do a semester under visitor visa right? And your experience in NTU was not really good? Too much classroom vibe? Knowing that I am 48 yold...
I think NTU is still a good choice, especially if you are just starting out in Mandarin. The location is good and it is a good entry into Taipei and opportunity to meet people. As far as the age, it is a bit of a younger crowd (oldest I noticed was mid-thirties). The quality really depends a lot on the teacher/classmates. The classroom next to me seemed to be having a great time and was more interactive (I think I was just in a shy class). The visitor visa will get you there (basically you can keep extending the visitors visa depending on if you continue studying or not). You could try it out for one semester and then change it up if you didn’t feel it was a good fit~
@@Travelingjoe Thanks for the infos man
Having lived in Vietnam for 4 years, the corruption and random rules about everything was maddening!!! Also having to be EXTRA aware of your things and being treated like a walking ATM as a foreigner was tiring. That said, it's a GREAT place to travel in and live is you don't have to work there!! I have been teaching Taiwanese students on line for the past 2 years and will be spending 3 weeks there and can't wait. They are all so very very kind and a few have told me when we meet, my money is no good -- I really don't expect them to pay for things, but I know they will insist!! One of my students and his family are taking me for a weekend vacation and have already said they would cover all the costs -- so very very generous. I have travelled enough to know that arguing with people about money is considered an insult, so I feel very fortunate to be experiencing such kindness.
As a Taiwanese my mother tongue is Taiwanese of course but during the elementary school days i read mandarin daily after school almost every day as a way of entertainment. I guess if a foreigner has learned how to use mandarin phonetic system correctly they should be able to learn Mandarin well by themselves and the way they speak mandarin is similar to that of a Taiwanese without a foreigner accent.

This apartment would work for me. Sadly I am comparing it to condos in Thailand that are much more modern and with beach views for much less. I do like the bathtub feature. Taipei would work for me.
I wonder how much this apartment would be now
Probably about the same, it’s a bit out of the city center so more affordable. Also it’s a “rooftop structure” (cough cough not technically legal) which lowers the cost.
Is there much spoken English in Taiwan? I do not know any Chinese at all.
There is ! (Taipei especially) A lot of people come here not knowing any Mandarin at all and are just fine. Not to mention you will likely pick up the basics pretty quick~
which is better 1on 1 tutorial or a group program?
They both have advantages, it really all depends on the teacher and classmates. Hopefully you can get a good group of talkative people and an outgoing teacher. I went with the group lessons because they are cheaper though. If I were you I would probably do intensive group lessons and then find a private tutor or language exchange partner to practice more with I think. (unless you can afford the ICLP program then do that) haha
不是馬祖,而是媽祖才對。
哎唷,我常常拼錯這個詞!😩

please im traveling to wuali, how i can I find this amazing hotspring area??
Hope you made it! There should be a lot of people down on the river, its relatively close to the center of town so you will certainly see it~ (Hopefully they have not closed it off)
I am going to Taiwan this August. Taroko national park looks very interesting. how did you get there, rent a car or with tourist company? thanks
We rented a car, I think it is probably the easiest way to get back and forth between spots. Although some people prefer scooters!
$600 for this magical apt w/everything included?! First one I've seen with a bathtub, balcony, patio, washer/dryer in unit, and nicely sized kitchen! Is there a listing link for this building?
There isn't a link that I know of, just a landlord renting it out privately. This was one of the better places I have seen around though, the bathtub and balcony surprised me as well!
This is crazy to me, where I'm from in the UK, I'm renting a TINY single room in a house sharing with three others and it's £402 a month (approx 16,179 ntd) and my rent is considered incredibly cheap!!! But to be in Taipei in a central area and being able to have your own place is mind boggling to me. Like, for less than what I pay now you at least get your own bathroom which I don't have here. And for a tiny bit more than my rent you have a fully functioning studio! I don't even live in a major city so to be able to get something like this in the capital is wild.
Bro thank you so much for the informations. But does it ask any requirements to study chinese language programs at NTU? Can you answer me brother?
There are requirements but they depend on the school, you should check out their website for more precise info! cld.liberal.ntu.edu.tw/en/index.html
Can we use you for the friend recommendation discount?
Thanks for posting this! I will be in Taipei this September through December. Do you know how i can find a short term room rental? Is there a website for roommate situations? I am also just starting to learn Mandarin, so ideally I hope to find someone to can speak a little English.
If you are looking for English friendly rooms and landlords then I really suggest joining the Facebook groups ! They are called like “roommates in Taipei” or “housing in Taiwan” things like that. (Also it’s easier to find short-term rentals via Facebook). If you want to find housing with a local landlord then I suggest a website named “591”, this is pretty much the top website for finding housing here. The downside it’s not very English friendly~
@@Travelingjoe Thanks for this tip! I will be studying Mandarin while i'm there, but it will be a while before i'm functionally fluent enough to speak the local language.
Sounds awesome, where will you study?
Good vedeo
Thank you, it was fun to make!
What is the music at the start?
Hey there! You know I can not really remember... however it is likely directly from youtube's music selection~
Thanks for your video. I wonder if it is possible (or practical) for a foreigner to travel to Taiwan for Lasik surgery? Would there be much difference in cost from what you quoted (being a visitor)? Thank you!
The price would be the same no matter resident or visitor, you could likely find an even more competitive price than I did. I think it could make sense because it’s about half the price of surgery back in USA, half vacation half eye clinic trip sounds nice ~
@@Travelingjoe Thank you for your reply. I presume one must plan for at least a 3-4 weeks stay for post surgery care and monitoring, right?
I had to do a check up once a week for four weeks, however I am not sure it is necessary beyond the first week. After the first checkup or so, they just give you eye drops. So I think it wouldn’t be a stretch if you wanted to cut down and maybe do a week or so~
@@Travelingjoe Thanks. Do you need to book far ahead for the first appointment? Can you just walk in? And how long do you have to wait to do the actual operation?
@@ytubby2008 You can call ahead or just walk in to schedule a consultation. At consultation they will tell you if yo are suitable for the procedure and then schedule the procedure for a week or two afterwards. It is really really quick, the procedure itself only takes about 5 minutes or so.
Was it easy to run through the immigration in Japan?
It was super easy, we just had to wait in the harbor for a little bit for immigration to open in the morning. A cool way to get back and forth~
Can i go to the port, buy the ticket there and drive on the same day? Or must i buy the ticket online before?
I bought mine online and it was pretty convenient, I am pretty sure you could buy them at the terminal as well so long as they had space on the ferry~
